How to Prepare for Your Vermont Family Photos: A Stress-Free Guide

Family photos are more than just snapshots—they’re memories you’ll treasure forever. As a Vermont family photographer, I love helping families feel confident, comfortable, and truly themselves in front of the camera. With a little planning and preparation, your session can be fun, relaxed, and full of authentic moments. Here’s my guide to getting ready for your family photo session in Vermont!

1. Coordinate Outfits, Don’t Match Exactly

One of the most common questions I get is, “What should we wear?” Instead of matching everyone head-to-toe, aim for a cohesive color palette. Neutral tones with pops of color often look timeless and elegant on camera. Think soft creams, blush pinks, denim, and earthy greens—perfect for Vermont’s natural scenery.

Avoid logos or busy patterns—they can be distracting. Instead, choose outfits that reflect your family’s style and personality. And don’t forget shoes and accessories—they add subtle, polished details to your look.

2. Plan Your Timing

Timing is everything for beautiful family photos. For outdoor sessions, we often aim for golden hour—the hour right before sunset—when the light is soft, warm, and magical. As your Vermont Photographer I am able to know when the sun sets no matter the time of year.

If you have little ones, try to schedule your session around naps and meals. A well-rested, fed child is a happy child, which makes for natural, joyful photos.

3. Keep Kids Comfortable and Happy

Kids thrive when they feel at ease. Bring along small snacks, water, and maybe a favorite toy to keep them engaged. I love incorporating playful prompts and games into sessions, so your children can be themselves rather than posing stiffly.

It’s also okay to let them explore! Some of my favorite photos come from those spontaneous moments—giggles, hugs, and even a little mischief. Before I became a full-time Vermont photographer, I worked in an elementary school! I have always been drawn to the smiles and chaos that come with the littles!

4. Bring Personal Touches

Family photos are extra special when they include meaningful details. A beloved blanket, a favorite book, or even your family pet can add layers of personality and authenticity to your session. These small touches often make the photos feel truly “you.”

5. Relax and Have Fun

The most important tip? Enjoy the experience! Family photos should feel like a memory in the making, not a stressful task. Trust your photographer (me!) to guide you, capture the moments that matter, and highlight the love you share as a family.

Bonus Tip: Book in Advance

Vermont’s seasons are beautiful but fleeting. Summer, fall, and winter sessions fill quickly, so booking early ensures you get your preferred date and location.

Family photos are more than just pretty pictures—they’re a way to freeze time, capturing the love, laughter, and connection that make your family unique. With these tips, you’ll feel prepared, confident, and ready for a stress-free, joyful session.

I fell in love with photography through my grandmother's photo albums. One of my all-time favorite things to do with her is to get comfy and reminisce on memories and learn our family history. I remember laughing, questioning, and enjoying every book. No matter how many times we looked through them. Each time we do I am usually at a different milestone in my life, which brings new appreciation to the same images.
